They often pose problems such as impactions, deay or pericoronitis (inflammation of the gum covering the tooth), and are therefore in some cases it is recommended to extract wisdom teeth.

What to expect during wisdom tooth removal?

Your dentist Aspley may give you one of three types of anesthesia. Local anesthesia, sedation anesthesia, or general anesthesia – depending on the complexity of the extraction. In some case gum and bone may need to be cut to get the tooth out. If this is needed, it will be followed by stitching up of the wound so they heal quickly. Absorbable sutures are used, which will dissolve themselves within a couple of days.

What to do after wisdom tooth removal?

  • Eat soft foods such like soups, pastas and rice.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Leave the initial gauze pad in for 1 hour.
  • Let a clot be formed on the extraction site. This is the first step towards healing of the wound.
  • Apply an icepack on the side of your face where the tooth was extracted. This will reduce swelling and redness.
  • Take painkillers as prescribed.
  • Rest for 24 hours following the procedure and limit activity.
  • Elevate the head.
  • After 24 hours, rinse with warm saline water.

What Not to do after wisdom tooth removal?

  • Do not drink from a straw, or suck on the extraction site, for 24 hours. This can dislodge the clot.
  • Do not smoke. It inhibits healing.
  • Avoid rinsing.
  • Do not spit.
  • Do not drink hot liquids.

Do I have to be knocked out during wisdom tooth removal?

No, not necessarily. Extractions are very common and in the majority of occasion considered small procedure and are usually done under local anesthesia. This means your dentist Aspley will only numb part of your mouth where work is needed. The rest of your body will be awake and you will be conscious enough to know what is going on.

What if I decide not to have my wisdom tooth removed?

A problematic wisdom tooth that stays in the mouth can cause further dental problems. These include damage to the surrounding teeth, alignment problems, jaw cysts, gum inflammation and sinus issues.

What are dry sockets?

Once your tooth is removed, it leave a hole in the bone where the tooth was placed. A clot usually forms here to protect the bone and nerves underneath. If this clot dislodges, the bone and nerves are exposed to air, fluids, and food. This causes an infection which is called a dry socket.

I had a broken tooth at the front and Dr Dev saw me the same day. I really appreciated that he took the time to explain my options and sent me home with a temporary repair. Going back for the prep for a crown was a very comfortable visit with Dr Dev making sure I knew just what he was doing throughout, that I was at ease at all times and explaining the cost - with which I was very happy.

Could not recommend enough. I went through a pretty emotional time after losing one of my front teeth and from the very first appointment they made me feel so much better! The procedure of getting a bridge was so easy and the end result was better then I ever expected! I just want to say another massive thank you to the team

Great service. I needed an emergency appointment and they were very kind and agreed to help on the day without a previous booking.

Dr Mona did an amazing job. I am an anxious patient, but her calm presence and professionalism put me at ease. Highly recommend.
